Distilled on September 10, 1969. Bottled on July 27, 2022. 52 years in oak — longer than most people have been alive.

1969 was the year of the moon landing. It was also the year this cask was filled at The Macallan. The whisky inside predates modern distilling practices, computer-controlled fermentation, and the global single malt boom. It was made by hand, in a different era, and it has been quietly maturing ever since.

This is The Rarest: Duncan Taylor's most exceptional reserve, created for single cask whiskies of utmost scarcity and sophistication. Cask No. 8376 began its life as an ex-Bourbon cask. After 47 years of maturation, a deliberate decision was made: on December 22, 2016, the whisky was transferred to a first-fill ex-Oloroso Sherry cask. This is a winemaker-level intervention on a half-century-old spirit — a calculated risk that added the final layer of dark fruit, spice, and polish that defines this expression today. It was bottled on July 27, 2022.

The Macallan has been crafting celebrated whiskies since 1824. A 52-year-old single cask expression from this distillery is not simply rare — it is a piece of Scotch whisky history. Bottled at 41.46% with no chill filtration and no added color, every detail of this whisky's extraordinary journey is preserved in the glass.

Tasting Notes

Color: Polished bronze

Nose: Rich dark chocolate with notes of overripe orange peel shining through. Hints of cinnamon and dusty spices, with a touch of aniseed, sweet wood, and creamy vanilla.

Palate: Rich toffee and demerara sugar bound into caramel biscuits. Fruitiness is more subdued and reminiscent of underripe fruits, perfectly balanced, with a little spice on the front of the tongue.

Finish: Leather, warm woods, and spice round out the finish.
