Duncan Taylor Single Cask Rum Caroni, Trinidad 1998 - 24 Years - Cask No. 38

Caroni distillery closed in 2002. The buildings were demolished. The site is gone. Among rum collectors worldwide, Caroni has become one of the most sought-after names in the category — the Port Ellen of rum.

Founded in Trinidad in 1918, Caroni produced a style of heavy, complex, deeply expressive rum that has never been replicated. Its closure by the Trinidadian government in 2002 ended production permanently. What remains are the casks that were already aging when the distillery fell silent — and as those casks are bottled and sold, the supply diminishes with no possibility of replenishment.

Distilled in 1998 and matured for 24 years, this single cask expression was carefully selected by the Duncan Taylor tasting panel and bottled at 50.6% without chill filtration and with no artificial coloring or added flavoring. It is an authentic and irreplaceable expression of what Caroni made at its finest.

Tasting Notes

Color: Light mahogany

Nose: Vanilla pods, raisins, cocoa, marzipan, toasted pineapple.

Palate: Cinnamon sticks, dried winter berries, toffee apples, honey, espresso.

Finish: Dry and long with delicate sweetness.

How to Drink It

Neat: The only way — allow it time in the glass. Caroni rewards patience.

With Water: A few drops open up the vanilla and marzipan on the nose and soften the espresso on the finish.

In Cocktails: A small measure transforms a rum Old Fashioned into something extraordinary.
